Chapter History
The Omicron Zeta Chapter was chartered at the University of Florida on Friday, November 5, 1973, under the administrations of Grand Basileus Marion W. Garnett, Seventh District Representative Moses C. Norman, and Florida State Representative Dorsey C. Miller, Jr.
The chartering Brothers, known as “The Impossible Dream,” laid the foundation for five decades of service. Cleveland Kiner served as the chapter’s first advisor. Since its inception, Omicron Zeta has been committed to upholding the ideals of Omega through campus and community involvement, and to exemplifying the Four Cardinal Principles in a manner consistent with the noble intentions of the Fraternity’s Founders.

Omicron Zeta Lineage
The value of our Fraternity is not in numbers, but in men — in real brotherhood. Eight men thoroughly immersed in the true Omega spirit are far greater assets than eighty with luke-warm enthusiasm. If any chapter has reached the maximum in numbers for efficient work and brotherly cooperation, let it initiate each year only a number of men equal to those leaving the chapter by way of graduation or otherwise. Men, real men of Omega calibre, strive for that which is most difficult of attainment. Keep Omega the most difficult Greek-letter society in which to obtain membership, and be assured that Omega material will never be found lacking.

Fraternity History
The History of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.
Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. is the first international fraternal organization founded on the campus of a historically Black college. Omega Psi Phi was founded on November 17, 1911, at Howard University in Washington, D.C.
The founders were three Howard University undergraduates — Edgar Amos Love, Oscar James Cooper, and Frank Coleman — joined by their faculty adviser, Dr. Ernest Everett Just. From the initials of the Greek phrase meaning “Friendship is essential to the soul,” the name Omega Psi Phi was derived, and that phrase was selected as the motto.

Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance, and Uplift were adopted as the Cardinal Principles. On November 23, 1911, in Thirkield Hall, Edgar Amos Love became the first Grand Basileus (National President). Cooper and Coleman were selected as Grand Keeper of Records and Grand Keeper of Seals, respectively.
Eleven Howard University undergraduate men were selected as charter members, and Alpha Chapter was organized with fourteen charter members on December 15, 1911. From those beginnings, Omega Psi Phi has grown into an international brotherhood of collegiate and graduate men committed to service and scholarship — a legacy Omicron Zeta proudly carries forward at the University of Florida.
